Trying out design and shape language for the main character: Nabby Downer

A base concept for the dream entity, just drawing inspiration.

A concept for the colorful blob, I wanted to go for a more painted aesthetic for the dream world and the blob to make it feel more out of place.

For the dreamscape, I had an idea of the stars within being the same colorful blobs as the one in the previous concept, as these blobs make up everything including the being.

As for the real world, I wanted it to seem boring and grey (of course), but not unappealing. So, to add some variety, I made the lines not connect and the colors bleeding in with their surroundings. Like those old children's stories with their pale painted color pallets like Whinnie the Pooh. It also makes the colors later on seem unnatural and alien by comparison.

Some more experimenting when we delve into the slowly decaying state of the human mind and body. To which the color pallet becomes exclusively black and white as the animation becomes sketchy and chaotic to match the mental state of our protagonist.

My many, MANY concepts for Nabby's three outfits she wears throughout the film. The hardest to get was her work uniform.

Expression sketches to see Nabby in action! As well as experimenting with slight changes in style.

This is Laura, Nabby's content wife. Unlike Nabby's design which took me a lot of iterations to figure out, she actually wasn't a struggle to figure out!
