"Ethereal" Synopsis
"Ethereal" is an experimental cosmic horror short film based off of the popular Lovecraft story "Color Out of Space" where through a curious finding of a colorful space like blob, an once dream-less businesswoman in a grey-scale world dreams of a cosmic wonderland full of color with an Ethereal entity trying to hold them in its embrace, though she wakes up before it can. In trying to have that dream again, the woman slowly starts trying to reach it through more desperate measures. Overtime they slowly destroy themselves both mentally and physically, eventually leaving the life and the wife they had behind as they're forever trapped in a dream-like state.
Ideation Process
My Ideation process is entirely based on drawing it out. When I have an idea in mind, I take out my phone and use my trusty art app Sketch to draw out my ideas! Whether its character concepts/designs, backgrounds, or even gathering images for reference!
Software Used: Sketch

Trying out design and shape language for the main character: Nabby Downer

A base concept for the dream entity, just drawing inspiration.

A concept for the colorful blob, I wanted to go for a more painted aesthetic for the dream world and the blob to make it feel more out of place.

For the dreamscape, I had an idea of the stars within being the same colorful blobs as the one in the previous concept, as these blobs make up everything including the being.

As for the real world, I wanted it to seem boring and grey (of course), but not unappealing. So, to add some variety, I made the lines not connect and the colors bleeding in with their surroundings. Like those old children's stories with their pale painted color pallets like Whinnie the Pooh. It also makes the colors later on seem unnatural and alien by comparison.

Some more experimenting when we delve into the slowly decaying state of the human mind and body. To which the color pallet becomes exclusively black and white as the animation becomes sketchy and chaotic to match the mental state of our protagonist.

Concept Stage
With the Ideation Process bringing "Ethereal" to life, now it's time for the concept stage (which believe it or not is my favorite part of the Pre-Production stage)! For this one I try to make as much art, designs, scriptwriting and test animations (if I have the time) as possible! Then have it be critiqued by my fellow peers to help further solidify the concepts into final designs and sets for the film!

My many, MANY concepts for Nabby's three outfits she wears throughout the film. The hardest to get was her work uniform.

Expression sketches to see Nabby in action! As well as experimenting with slight changes in style.

This is Laura, Nabby's content wife. Unlike Nabby's design which took me a lot of iterations to figure out, she actually wasn't a struggle to figure out!
